Questions parents ask

myKesho is a free financial literacy app for Kenyan families. From birth to 5, parents save for their child and family can add with a gift link. From 6 to 17, children get their own wallet to save, spend and share, earn from chores, and learn with 93 money lessons in 6 levels. Parents approve every spend, and myKesho holds no money: families keep their own cash, and the app keeps the record.

Is myKesho free?

Yes. myKesho is free for Kenyan families. There’s no card, M‑Pesa or bank detail to enter.

Does myKesho hold my money?

No. You keep the cash at home or wherever you keep it. myKesho is the record: how much each child has in their Wallet, Save and Share jars.

So how does my child spend?

They ask in their app, like “KES 100 for a school trip”. You say yes, hand over the cash or buy it together, and it comes off their wallet. You can also record it yourself.

What does my child learn?

How money is earned, saving for a goal, spending wisely, needs and wants, giving, spotting scams, budgets and growing money. 93 short lessons, set in Kenya, plus real practice with their own wallet every week.

What ages is it for?

From birth to 17, in four groups. Chipukizi (0 to 5): a savings pot you run, no chores and no app yet, and relatives can add with a gift link. Mvumbuzi (6 to 10): their own app, chores that pay and short lessons. Mjenzi (11 to 14): bigger goals, budgets and the Grow lab. Kiongozi (15 to 17): a weekly budget of their own and grown-up lessons. The 93 lessons open level by level as they grow.

Does my child need a phone or an email?

No email. Kids sign in with a username and a 4-digit PIN you choose together, on a family phone, tablet or computer.

What do I need to sign up?

An email address and a phone, tablet or computer with a browser. It takes about three minutes.

Can both parents use it?

Yes. Invite another parent or guardian from Account. Each signs in with their own email and password.

Is it OK for boarding school?

Yes. Set the Term pocket money and the term dates. One week’s share opens every Monday, so it lasts the whole term.

Can grandparents and relatives send a gift?

Yes. Share your child’s gift link. They say what they’re sending and leave a message, then send the money to you the usual way. You confirm it, it goes into your child’s wallet with the message, and your child can say thank you.

Can older kids spend without asking?

Yes, if you want. Set a small weekly amount they can spend without asking. They still record each spend, you see it, and anything over the amount is a normal ask.

Can my child ask to play games?

Yes. They can ask to play a game for a set time, and you say yes or not now. If a game costs money, it’s a normal money ask.

Will there be M‑Pesa and bank links?

Yes, that’s next, with a licensed partner. Until then, nothing in myKesho needs your money details.

Is my family’s data safe?

Your family’s information is private to your family. We don’t sell it or show ads. You can download or delete everything at any time from Account.
