How myKesho works
myKesho is a free financial literacy app for Kenyan families. From birth to 5, parents save for their child and family can add with a gift link. From 6 to 17, children get their own wallet to save, spend and share, earn from chores, and learn with 93 money lessons in 6 levels. Parents approve every spend, and myKesho holds no money: families keep their own cash, and the app keeps the record.
Getting started
- 1
Give them their own wallet
Sign up with your email and add your child. Choose how money comes in: chores they earn from, a weekly allowance, gifts, or term money for boarding. It takes about three minutes.
- 2
They save, spend and share
Their money splits into Wallet, Save and Share. They set savings goals, ask before they spend, and give a little. You keep the cash; myKesho keeps the record.
- 3
They learn, you guide
Short money lessons set in Kenya teach the why. Every ask is a yes or not yet from you, and every lesson ends with a question to talk about at home.
Three jars for every child
Every payday, the money they earn or are given splits into three jars before anything is spent. You choose the split; most families start with 60% Wallet, 30% Save and 10% Share.
- Wallet is for spending. When your child wants to use some, they ask in their app and you say yes.
- Save is for later and for goals they pick, like football boots or a bike. Money only comes out with your yes.
- Share is for giving: a church harambee, a friend in need, a gift for Shosh.
Asking, and saying yes
Children never spend on their own. They ask with a reason, like “KES 100 for a school trip”, and you say yes or not yet. If it’s a yes, you hand over the cash or buy it together, and myKesho takes it off their wallet. Kids can also ask to play a game for a set time, which you can allow or not.
Tasks and goals
Set tasks around the home and what each is worth. When your child marks one done, you approve it and the money lands on payday. Children choose their own savings goals; you approve them, and can add a small weekly Save bonus that works like interest.
Lessons
93 short money lessons in 6 levels, from coins and notes to compound growth. Each takes two to four minutes and is set in Kenya. After every lesson, you get a question to ask at home. Browse the lessons.
Boarding school
For children at boarding school, set Term pocket money and the term dates. One week’s share opens every Monday, so the money lasts the whole term instead of running out in week two.
The money
myKesho doesn’t hold or move money. You keep the cash; myKesho keeps the record of what each child has. M‑Pesa and bank links are coming next, with a licensed partner.
Ready for tomorrow.
Start this week. Their first payday can be this Friday.
Free. Sign up with your email. No card, M‑Pesa or bank details needed.
