Rent or buy a home?
Rent, deposits, mortgages and the long view
The story
Auntie Njambi rents a flat for KES 30,000 a month. Friends keep saying, “Renting is throwing money away. Buy!”
The big idea
Most people buy a home with a mortgage: a long loan from a bank, often 15 to 25 years. You pay part of the price upfront as a deposit, and the bank lends the rest with interest.
Ask at home
Talk with your teen about where your family lives, whether you rent or own, and why that choice made sense.
The full lesson, with its questions and Kesho Stars, is in the myKesho kids app.
