VAT and PAYE in plain words
The tax on a receipt and the tax on a salary
The story
Njeri buys shoes for KES 1,160. Her receipt shows: price KES 1,000, VAT 16% KES 160.
The big idea
VAT is a tax added to most things you buy. In Kenya it is 16%. The shop collects it and pays it to the government through KRA, the Kenya Revenue Authority.
Ask at home
Look at a supermarket receipt with your teen and find the VAT line together.
