Lending to the government
How Treasury bills work, simply
The story
Here’s how a bill works. You buy one that will pay KES 100,000 at the end of 364 days. You don’t pay 100,000 today. In this example, you pay KES 90,000.
The big idea
Governments borrow too. Kenya’s government borrows short term by selling Treasury bills through the Central Bank of Kenya. They last 91, 182 or 364 days.
